CEFR C1 in Swedish: what you can do

Last updated 28 October 2026

At C1 Swedish is a working language. You can study, work and argue in it, and you notice how a sentence is said, not only what it says. The remaining gaps are idioms, regional variation, and the many ways to be a little more or a little less formal.

What you can do

  • Understand long, complex texts and read between the lines.
  • Speak fluently and spontaneously, with few visible searches for words.
  • Use the language flexibly for social, academic and professional purposes.
  • Write well-structured, detailed texts on complex subjects.
  • Follow television and radio, including fast speech and jokes.

A quick self-check

You are probably at C1 if you can do most of these:

  • Switch from a relaxed chat to a polite email without sounding stiff.
  • Explain an idiom and say when it fits.
  • Follow a lecture at a Swedish university.
  • Notice that a speaker comes from Skåne or Göteborg, even if you cannot always place the accent.

Idioms and fixed phrases

Idioms are the mark of an advanced speaker. Learn them as whole phrases, and notice the tone: some are playful, some are a little old-fashioned. More in everyday idioms.

Idiom Literal meaning Actual meaning
Det är ingen ko på isen. There is no cow on the ice. There is no danger.
Slå två flugor i en smäll. Hit two flies in one blow. Kill two birds, one stone.
Hålla tummarna. Hold the thumbs. Keep your fingers crossed.
Ha skinn på näsan. Have skin on the nose. Be tough, not easily hurt.

Register shifts

The same idea can sound very different: Läget? (casual, "How is it going?") against Hur står det till? (somewhat formal). Fixa and kolla are everyday, while ordna and undersöka are more formal. At C1 you pick the right one without thinking.

Dialects and regional Swedish

You do not have to speak a dialect, but you should understand them.

  • Skåne (Scania). Diphthongised vowels and a uvular r, a legacy of centuries of Danish rule that ended in 1658.
  • Göteborg. A noticeable, singing intonation and a relaxed style of speech.
  • Norrland. Many local varieties with their own melody and rhythm.
  • Finland Swedish. The variety spoken by the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland, which usually lacks the Sweden Swedish pitch accent contrast and has some vocabulary of its own.

Academic writing

Academic Swedish is impersonal and precise. Typical frames: Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka... (The aim of this essay is to investigate...), Det kan konstateras att... and Utifrån detta kan man dra slutsatsen att... Avoid casual particles like ju and liksom in such texts.

What you may find hard

  • Idioms with no English match. Do not translate them word by word.
  • Fast regional speech. Watch films and series from different regions to train your ear.
  • Collocations. Fatta ett beslut, not göra ett beslut.

The TISUS exam

TISUS (Test In Swedish for University Studies) is the test used for admission to Swedish universities. It tests the academic Swedish you need for study, so it is a practical goal at this level.

How to practise at this level

Read novels, listen to Swedish podcasts and write essays on topics you know well. Try food idioms for more colourful expressions. When ready, move on to C2.

Practice

Hålla tummarna means to keep your fingers crossed. Skåne was Danish until 1658. An academic essay opens with a phrase such as Syftet med denna uppsats är att...
