CEFR C2 in Spanish: what you can do

Last updated 18 October 2026

C2 is the highest level on the CEFR scale. At this level you can understand virtually everything you hear or read, and you can summarise information from different sources in a coherent way. You express yourself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, and you can differentiate finer shades of meaning even in complex situations.

What you can do

  • Understand virtually any spoken or written language, including fast native speech and unfamiliar regional forms.
  • Summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments in a coherent presentation.
  • Express yourself spontaneously and very fluently, with a precise sense of nuance.
  • Use humour, irony and allusion, and understand them when others use them.
  • Adapt fully to the audience, and handle the tone of a formal presentation or a casual joke with equal ease.

Typical grammar at C2

  • Full command of every tense and mood, including literary and archaic forms where a text calls for them.
  • Precise use of ser and estar, por and para, and the subjunctive in its most subtle uses.
  • Stylistic choice: the difference between a neutral sentence and an elegant one.
  • Awareness of dialect: the difference between Castilian and the regional varieties of Latin America, and the use of vos in the Río de la Plata.

Vocabulary themes

Any field, including literature, philosophy, technical specialisms, and the colloquial speech of different regions.

Example sentences at C2

Where to go from here

C2 is mastery, not the end of learning. Keep reading widely, listen to a range of accents, and write regularly. The textbook courses and Pip's exercises keep your accuracy sharp, and the blog keeps your reading varied.
